Risk-reducing surgery for women at high risk of epithelial ovarian cancer

چکیده
Key content The lifetime risk of ovarian cancer in the general population is 1.4% but women with hereditary ovarian cancer syndromes have a lifetime probability ashighas 25–60%for developing epithelial ovarian cancer. Screening has not been found to be associated with a statistically significant reduction in mortality from ovarian cancer and cannot be routinely recommended even for women at high risk. Serum CA125 levels are only elevated in 50–60% of stage I ovarian cancers and interval cancers may develop between screening visits. Studies show a 4–20% risk of finding an occult malignancy at the time of risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Studies support the efficacy of risk-reducing bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy in significantly reducing the risk of gynaecological and breast cancer in women who carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. Women undergoing risk-reduction bilateral salpingooophorectomy should be counselled about the effects of early menopause and the available management options including hormone replacement therapy.

Failure to Demonstrate the Role of High Risk Human Papilloma Virus in Epithelial Ovarian Cancer
Background and Aims: Ovarian cancer is one of most common causes of cancer related women's mortalities. Human papilloma virus is a known factor concerning cervical cancer but its role in causing ovarian cancer is not yet verified. A few studies also identified HPV DNA in ovarian carcinoma tissues. However, some studies did not detect HPV DNA in ovarian carcinoma tissues. In this articl...

Ovarian cancer is second prevalent cancer among gynecologic malignancies and the most common type of ovarian cancer is epithelial form (85-90 percent). To detect the risk factors for the epithelial ovarian cancer, a case-control study was conducted in Valieasr hospital in 1988. In this study, 118 cases with epithelial ovarian cancer (according histological records) and 240 controls without any ...

EDITOR—Approximately 5% of cases of epithelial ovarian cancer result from an inherited susceptibility. Some of the genetic mutations responsible have recently been identified. It is estimated that BRCA1 carriers have a 28% lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer, while BRCA2 carriers have a risk of 0.4% of developing ovarian cancer at the age of 50, which rises to 27% by the age of 70. The r...

Background and purpose: Ovarian cancer is the fourth leading cause of death from gynecological cancers in women. Using specific tumor markers that help in making diagnosis at early stages improve therapeutic outcomes. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of the Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm (ROMA) index in patients with ovarian mass. Materials and methods: A cr...
